The familiar Microsoft software you know and love, but which to choose?
Following Directions 2018 and the strong roadmap for Microsoft Dynamics NAV, we have been contacted by many Microsoft Dynamics GP customers enquiring what the future looks like for them. When implementing Microsoft Dynamics NAV, Microsoft have a 10 year extended life cycle support policy. NAV 2017 already takes us to 2027 with guaranteed investment and support from Microsoft. NAV 2018 is being released in December 2017 by Microsoft, followed swiftly in 2018 by the release of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Tenerife the next release of NAV. The future looks bright for NAV.
We are finding more GP users comparing the strong roadmap of NAV to that of GP, leading them to engage in discussions with TES regarding migrating from GP to NAV. Microsoft enables Dynamics GP users to trade in their current GP licence value against a new NAV license, when combined with the TES migration tools from GP to NAV. This makes for a commercially attractive proposition to switch and take advantage of the wider NAV functionality and roadmap from Microsoft.

A clear message was delivered by Microsoft around their investments in NAV and Office 365 to support digital transformation in organisations so that they can remain competitive in todays world. Whilst there are many similarities between NAV and GP we wanted to highlight some of the variances that clients consider when switching from GP to NAV.
Essentially, they are both comprehensive ERP solutions with an array of powerful tools to enable you to manage your business’ finances, operations, human resources, projects, supply chain, and manufacturing processes. Both are Microsoft products, which mean that they work seamlessly with other Microsoft solutions and systems. It also means that they have a familiar, intuitive user interface that enables users to adopt it and learn it quickly.
Microsoft Dynamics NAV is well suited for both out of the box use and customised solutions, and ideal when you need to develop a specific functionality for your sector. It is easily scalable to support your growth used by organisations from 5 users to 1000’s of users, meeting the needs of your business now, tomorrow and in the future, due to the Microsoft long term commitment and investment.
Microsoft Dynamics GP whilst it is easy to implement, quick and easy doesn’t always support your long-term goals. It is an out of the box ERP solution with limited customisation, UK partner network and roadmap.
Some variances to consider
Financial management –
GP: Includes a range of functionality for financial management and fulfils your specific business needs with control and security
NAV: Complete functionality for financial management and a more flexible accounting plan that can trace financial transactions through account dimensions. We also offer a Total Approvals portal that enhances the NAV system for comprehensive budget management, including mobile approvals for budget holders.
GP: You can easily configure and run consolidated accounts.
NAV: With NAV you get a flexible reporting structure, which means you can deliver results in exactly the way your company requires.
Sales order processing –
GP: Includes ‘out-of-box’ features that enables automated sales order processing with customised Word templates which can be e-mailed to customers, and the ability to collect line item billing information for items not in stock.
NAV: Invoice for stock and non-stock items. Leverages the flexible reporting tool that helps to create invoices which are based on the company’s or customer requirements.
GP: Payroll functionality is an ‘out of the box’ functionality in Dynamics GP.
NAV: Payroll functionality is available through an integrated third-party solution, such as sage payroll system.
GP: Equipped with material requirements planning functionality, GP makes possible procurement decisions and precise procurement adjustment according to specific requirements.
NAV: Comprehensive procurement functionality provides real-time access to order status, product specification, production plans, inventory, requisition management and purchase order authorisation.
GP: Sales forecasting, job costing, quality assurance, engineering change management and capacity requirement planning is all included in GP.
NAV: NAV improves performance from production, and your shop floor to the bottom line. By controlling different manufacturing areas ranging from order entry to delivery, leveraging tools specifically for production orders, supply and capacity, planning, agile and manufacturing, version management, demand forecasting machine centres, finite loading and production scheduling.
Inventory Management –
GP: Controls inventory by managing it on a site-by-site basis, reduces handling and increases accuracy for single and multisite warehouse operations, and ensures the right inventory is available to meet customer needs
NAV: Efficiently track inventory items with multiple characteristics in order to reduce the number of inventory items in the system.
Project Management –
GP: Time sheets, expense reports and resource control along with the billing functionality help you control project direction, cost and completion.
NAV: With support for budgeting and resource management NAV enables you to plan, manage and track projects by tracking expenses, predicting availability and planning capacity.
In conclusion both NAV and GP have their Pro’s and Con’s for customers depending on their requirements, however, when looking at the level of investment from Microsoft in NAV / Dynamics 365 “Tenerife” and the clear position it has within the Dynamics 365 / Office 365 family going forward a review of the migration options from GP to NAV should be well worth a small investment in time.
This is further emphasised when looking at the size of the NAV partner network and customer base within the UK and rest of world.
